3B8M Mauritius (2021)

3B8M will be QRV during CQWWCW 2021 and a few days before and after the contest. This will be a M/M operation by G0CKV (3B8HA, SM5CKV), JK3GAD (M0CFW), KX7M, M0SDV and W6NV.

The planned 2020 operation did not happen for well known reasons. Now for 2021 the licences and travel arrangements are all in hand. Travel bureaucrazy for covid is as challenging as LOTW certificates and not recommended for the cognitively handicapped or digital novices. We are working on it.

Charles M0OXO will handle QSLs for 3B8M and 3B8HA via OQRS or direct mail and logs will also be uploaded to ClubLog and LOTW.

QSLs for 3B8/M0CFW to M0CFW, QSLs for 3B8/KX7M via F5CWU and LOTW if Denny is successful configuring the upload, QSLs for M0SDV via OQRS and LOTW and QSLs for 3B8/W6NV via W6NV.

We will start setting up antennas and stations on Sunday November 21st and might be QRV on the bands in the days leading up to the contest. We will bring a microphone this time and Jamie M0SDV might try some low-band SSB to hone his pile-up skills and good humour and we might possibly also do some FT8 on the low bands.

Plan is to use 4 K3 radios and 3 SPE amplifiers. Three Spiderbeam 18m poles will support a top-loaded (umbrella) vertical for 160, an inverted-L for 80 and – new for this year – a vertical dipole for 40. On 20-15-10 we will use single-pole VDAs similar to what was used at 3B8MU in 2014. All antennas will be right on the beach. If there is a ionospheric storm you won’t hear us, nor would you hear us if there is a local terrestrial storm – the antennas will all be blown away because we are literally on the beach right in the middle of the ocean and we are using flimsy antenna hardware.

N6VI did a virtual club talk on the 2019 operation which can be watched here.

WX0V recorded our 80m pile-up in 2019 here. Pray for us please.

Charles M0OXO

I was born in the 1960’s and have lived all my life in the Coal Mining Town of Barnsley in South Yorkshire, Northern England. My parents were all from this area of Yorkshire and my father worked in the main Industry of the local Collieries as a face worker. I have been married to my wife Debbie for 35+ years and we have two children and two grandchildren.

I have been licensed for around 20 years after my interest was re-kindled when I retired from my role as a Police Officer within South Yorkshire Police Force. The latter few years were spent as Radio Operator in the Force Operations Control Room at Sheffield, before my career ended.

IOTA chasing is (and always has been) my real passion, as climbing the ladder to reach Honour Roll status was always my main aim. The 1000 Islands Trophy is still out of reach but I am heading in the right direction. I am currently a Board Member of IOTA Ltd and IREF.

In my free time I am a keen Photographer of Wildlife, Aviation, (anything really) but the QSL Manager role is my main passion within Ham Radio.
